**Sugar**.

“Sweet, white and deadly” is how my father used to describe it.

I remember reading years ago, in a book called *The Sugar Blues*, how bad **sugar** is for you. But it’s one thing to know it and another to act upon it.

Then around this time last year I read the book *Sweet Poison* by *David Gillespie* and better understood the devastating impact **sugar** was having on my body.

Because it is basically a drug. Very **addictive**. Very toxic. Very deadly.

What’s really important is to understand the different types of **sugar**. The basic ones are glucose, galactose & fructose.

Yet when specific combinations are made using two of these we end up with maltose, lactose, and sucrose.

And it’s the excess consumption of fructose (one half of sucrose) that’s doing all the damage.

When I did go on a “no **sugar**” diet I managed to lose several **kg** which was great.

But unfortunately the results didn’t last because I got hooked again.

So I intend to make it a priority with this program to stay away from added **sugar** but it is only one small yet significant component.

Actually, we don’t need to give up all sugar. Just fructose. Sucrose contains half fructose and half glucose. So that’s out. And when we eat a couple of pieces of fruit it’s OK because the fibre counteracts the ill effects of the fructose.

But glucose is fine. So it means we need to change our recipes, replacing sucrose with glucose or malt syrup. Or a combination of both.

And give up fruit juice and any other high sucrose foods that ome without the fibre packaging.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a little sugar. I think the substitutes are much worse. I had to give up diet coke because it really messes up my digestive system. It is definitely addictive (sugar), and if you completely give it up you will feel deprived.

I used to think the same thing: surely there are worse things than sugar? Until I read the book “Sweet Poison”. And better understood what it’s doing to our bodies.

I don’t deny how bad the artificial sweeteners are and certainly don’t encourage their use.

But I would go so far as to say that I believe the consumption of excess fructose is actually as bad as smoking cigarettes. But I’ll let you make your own conclusions from the research if you get a chance to read it. I would be interested in your own thoughts.

Suffice to say that going completely without sugar is perhaps unrealistic given the way it’s added to everything we eat these days.

But we can remove it a great deal from our diets e.g. NO soft drink or fruit juice or ice cream or biscuits or regular chocolate or candy or most fast food etc.

Perhaps the occasional dessert is OK and it’s better to be polite than refuse. But I now weigh 12kg less as a result of giving it up. And that’s with eating plenty of normal “carbs” and plenty of fat and not counting calories. Not exactly what we’ve been taught up until now.
